At the age of fifteen, two weeks ago, at his first FIS World Cup event, he won the qualifiers, besting his countryman and undeniable top halfpipe rider Scotty James. He did it by going big. Not just large but mega. I’ve always said amplitude is the hardest trick. If that is true, Val may be the rider doing the hardest trick, consistently. In fact, perhaps no other riders today can make big spins in the pipe look lazy and slow rotating.
